Originally Narragansett Indian territory, Washington County remains the least densely populated area of the state.  With English settlers determined to secure large tracts of land for their king, the Indians were eventually displaced and, in 1729, the region became known as Kings County.  Claiming hundreds of acres for farmsteads and establishing villages to support them, the region boasts nine country towns and 36 villages across 329 square land miles. With the annual Washington State Fair, an old-time country fair showcasing agriculture and highlighting 4H and Grange competitions, the area retains its legacy.
