Life in Newport County

Once the home of the Wampanoag Indian, Newport County became a favorite among white settlers who established the county in 1703.  Consisting of Newport, Jamestown, Middletown, Portsmouth, Tiverton and Little Compton, the area soon became known for its lucrative manufacturing and shipping trade.  Its beautiful landscape and shorelines quickly attracted Colonial gentry bringing intellectuals and artists as well as the nation’s wealthiest businessmen and their families, earning its only city, Newport, the distinction of “America’s First Resort.” Today, the area remains a popular vacation destination offering both visitors and residents alike a vast array of activities, sports, culture and entertainment.  It is also known for the Naval War College and Naval Station Newport that employ numerous technology firms across the region, drawing engineers and other professionals from around the country.  With a population of more than 80,000 across 102 square miles, Newport County has maintained its unique historical origins while creating a contemporary lifestyle that suits both single adults and families.
