Have you ever been touring a house, chatting away with your spouse, partner, or agent, and revealed your real opinion about the color of the living room carpet?
If so, there’s something you should know: Many for-sale homes nowadays have electronic recording devices set out that don’t look like recording devices. You may think you have a right to privacy in this case, but when you walk into someone else’s home, you don’t have the same right to privacy that you would in your own home or a public space. That said, there are a couple of points to remember next time you enter a home:
1. Don’t insult or be mean to the seller. You may have to negotiate with them later!
2. Don’t give your hand away. In other words, don’t be forthright with all of your information and give the seller leverage by saying you’ll only offer, say, $300,000 when you really think the home is worth $400,000.
When you walk into someone else’s home, you don’t have the same right to privacy that you would in your own home or a public space.

The bottom line is this: Loose lips sink ships, even in house hunting. Watch out for any Alexa devices when walking through homes, because they allow buyers to eavesdrop on you from any room. A lot of homeowners have Google Nest, so even if you’re standing just outside the home you have to be careful. Keep your opinions to yourself until you’re far away from the home.
